Nicola
Lillie
Nicola is inspired by architectural forms and the value systems built between place, object and person. Since graduating in 2015 from Hereford College of Arts; Nicola has explored texture, form and shape and has developed a distinct geometric and sculptural design language within her work. Working with precious materials, she creates contemporary jewellery on a range of scales - from minimalist accents to statement pieces.
Nicola participated in the 2021 BBC series, All That Glitters, teaches evening courses at Hereford College of Arts and is returning to study her Masters Degree in Contemporary Craft in 2022.
Amanda
Ray
Amanda is drawn to the strong geometric lines synonymous with those of the Art Deco period and in more recent years, many of her ideas for her Raku jewellery have come from a long-time passion for the designs of the 60s.
Known for its unpredictability, raku can produce the most lustrous and colourful of surface finishes in a good firing. Silver nitrate, which can be mixed with different pigments to create the colourful designs, is applied to the ceramic pieces and fired to about 930°. The work is then removed from the kiln, placed in paper and sawdust, layered with more paper and finally damp wood chippings. It is at this point that the glazes start to transform - the flames creating the most wonderful lustres. Areas left unglazed are carbonised by the smoke to produce the contrasting, dark matt surface. The pieces are finally cooled, polished and assembled using handmade silver fittings.
Alice
Shepherd
Primitive and primordial in its influence, yet modern in its execution, Alice draws inspiration from her daily life and expresses her passion for animals and nature in her elegantly crafted jugs, vases, plates and tiles.
Alice was born in Pretoria, South Africa. After completing a Higher Diploma in Ceramic Design at the Technikon, Pretoria, she moved to Port Elizabeth where she set up a teaching and working studio.
In 2002 she relocated to England and opened a studio near Shipston-on-Stour.
Artist's Statement: To make a living from art is not always easy but I take a great deal of reward from the creative process. It is a pleasure to know the love and care I put in my work is transferred into the wider world.
Penny
Warren
Incorporating colour into jewellery without the use of precious stones or enamelling techniques has always been Penny’s main area of interest. In 2001 she began to use anodised aluminium as a permanent way to colour metal and became an instant convert due to its limitless surface decoration potential.
Penny hand-prints and dyes the aluminium with textured papers, and compliments this with roll milled silver which is sometimes oxidised. Nature can be a direct inspiration in the designs but she is also drawn to simple geometric shapes that express the colours and textures to their best advantage. Sometimes working from sketches but mainly working directly with the material, Penny finds that her designs grow organically through the process of play. The joy of using colour is a theme that has run through her work since she first started making 35 years ago and anodised aluminium allows her to express that in limitless ways.
Rebecca
Fierek
Rebecca studied illustration at University and started her career as an art teacher. She made some very simple versions of her current range of birds as wedding favours and was delighted when people asked her to make more.
Each bird and butterfly is individually hand pressed into a mould and hand painted in her own unique style.
Rebecca’s work is heavily influenced by her Cornish surroundings, recently she has been lucky enough to have a nature reserve created in her village which has brought with it a new array of birds meaning endless inspiration for her!
