Simon Hulbert

Having studied in Wales Simon has lived and worked in Wales ever since. His first workshop was at Tredegar house in South Wales and in 1993 he moved to Hay on Wye and set up Brook Street Pottery and Gallery making garden terracotta and curating a series of ceramics exhibitions,

Following a series of study trips and residences in Jingdezhen, China Simon has now downsized his practice to focus on small-scale porcelain functional pots. He has a new studio just outside Hay and joined The Haymakers cooperative in 2022.

Having spent many years making large scale terracotta at his studio in Hay Simon is now enjoying the technical challenges of potting on a much smaller scale using a very fine bodied porcelain. All the work , bottles, cups, beakers and jars are thrown on the potters wheel and often turned when leather hard to refine the shapes.

They are glazed with multiple high fired glazes making each piece both functional and unique. The rich tenmoku style dark glaze is often used with a honey glaze to create translucent layers across the forms. This is often contrasted with a celadon style glaze on the interiors.

Recently Simon has collaborated with a Chinese kiln builder and made an experimental low tech charcoal kiln which can give a wood fired finish.

His studio is open by appointment and during Art Trails in the region.
