This hand-turned bowl is made from a solid piece of black walnut grown in Herefordshire. It is based on a traditional 18th century bowl in the National Trust Collection at Cotehele House in Cornwall. Antique bowls can fetch prices into the thousands….
The term “wassail” is derived from the Anglo-Saxon “Waes hal” meaning good health and was associated with drinking celebrations at Christmastide and the Old 12th N ight (Jan 17th).In medieval times villagers would have the expectation of presents of food and drink from the local lord of the manor in return for their expression of goodwill often in the form of a tradition wassail song.
In addition there was a tradition which has been revived more recently of ceremonies in the cider orchards particularly in the West Country. The trees are blessed to ensure a good harvest making offerings such as toast soaked in cider and the revellers make a hullabaloo to scare away evil spirits.
Bowl comes with a copy of a traditional Wassailing song.
